The tiger pair — uncuttable
Two friendly stones placed side by side with one empty point between them (the 'pair', 双) are connected: the opponent can't cut because playing in the gap is self-atari. The pair is one of the safest connecting shapes — it keeps eye potential and can't be separated. When you must keep two stones connected under attack, forming the pair is often the answer.
