Count before you fight
Before committing to a local fight, count the liberties of both your group and your opponent's. The group with more liberties can usually capture the other. A lone centre stone has 4 liberties; on the edge 3; in the corner 2. Connected stones share liberties, so a 2-stone group in the centre can have up to 6.
