13.2 · Endgame Moves & Their Size

Step 1 / 2

Play the biggest endgame first

In the endgame, every boundary play has a size: how many points it gains or saves. The skill is counting each move's value and playing the largest first. A sente endgame move (one the opponent must answer) is essentially free — play those as you find them. Gote endgame moves are taken from biggest to smallest. Accurate counting turns a close game into a win.
