Three ways to escape
When your group is in atari, you have three ways to survive. EXTEND: add a stone in the direction of open space to gain liberties (but watch for ladders). CAPTURE: if a neighbouring enemy group is itself low on liberties, capturing it removes the threat and saves you. CONNECT: join your group to a friendly group nearby that has liberties to spare. If none of the three works, the stone is lost — don't waste moves saving dead stones.
