8.5 · Making Two Eyes

Step 1 / 2

How to make eyes

When your group is surrounded and must live, two principles guide you. FIRST, expand the eye space — push outward to make the enclosed space as large as possible, because larger spaces live more easily (a four-point space lives where a three-point space dies). SECOND, play the vital point before the opponent — if the shape's centre decides life or death, occupy it immediately. Combine the two: enlarge toward a four-point-or-bigger shape, then take any vital point inside.
