One liberty = atari
A group is in atari when it has exactly one liberty. The instant you can spot every atari on the board — both ones you can give and ones your group suffers — you stop losing stones to simple captures. Make it a habit: after each move, scan for any group (yours or theirs) down to a single liberty.
