Initiative: sente and gote
Sente and gote describe who moves next. A sente move leaves the opponent compelled to answer — you play it and still move first somewhere else, so its real cost is nearly zero. A gote move ends your turn outright: after it, the opponent chooses the next point. Strong players hunt sente gains across the whole board before paying for one big gote, and they try to end every local exchange on their own sente — each one banked is a free move somewhere else. Watch for the difference in this position: somewhere White must answer, somewhere nobody must.
Find a sente move (one White must answer), then a big gote point.
