Square four = dead
A 2×2 square of four empty points is one of the famous dead shapes: fill any one point and what remains is a bent three, which dies at its centre — even moving first, the defender cannot make two eyes. Recognising it saves a move: don't defend your own square four, and attack it when the opponent has one. Try it yourself: click ANY point inside and see why two eyes never appear.
